In 1970, I graduated from the University of
Canterbury with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
After completing my degree, I joined the Chartered
Accounting firm of Lake Smith & Co and worked for 2 years
before leaving on the expected "Overseas Experience".
During my time away, I worked for an interesting
variety of Chartered Accounting firms in South Africa, England and
Sierra Leone, carrying out many accounting, audit and fraud
investigations.
On returning to New Zealand, I joined the firm of
Midgley & Co. a practice my father had set up some years
earlier. Midgley & Co. expanded along with its major client
Smiths City Ltd.
As a business advisor and Chartered Accountant, I
have assisted many small business enterprises reach further and
become successful. Over the ten years I was with Midgley & Co,
I helped grow the practice until in 1985, the practice merged with
one of the big 4 accounting frims.
I continued to develop a broad range of clients,
and in February 1998 I left KPMG and formed the practice of
Midgley Partners.
Today, I work with and advise a wide range of
clients and business enterprises from very small sole proprietor
businesses to large corporates with diverse ownership.
I act as a Statutory Supervisor for a variety of
Retirement Villages predominantly in the Canterbury area.
Over recent years I have assisted a number of UK immigrants with
settling in NZ and setting up businesses. Many of these clients
have significant other investments which I oversee.
I am a member of the New Zealand Institute of
Chartered Accountants (NZICA) and a member of Chartered
Professional Accountants (CPA) Australia
I served twelve years as a member of the board at
Christ's College, Christchurch, an independent secondary school for
boys, my particular area being the development of the School's
Trust Fund. I am currently the honorary treasurer of The
Christchurch Club.
For recreation I enjoy tennis, sailing, vintage and
classic cars and time spent with my wife and four children.
